Students’ conference “Education reform in BiH“in UWCiM |
On Wednesday 10th of February the United World College in Mostar hosted students’ conference “Education reform in BiH”. The conference, initiated by UWCiM students Hilary Johnson (USA) and Shaked Atia (Israel), gathered 40 high schools from Herzegovina for discussion about the urgent problems of current educational set-up in BiH. “We wanted to involve the students in the education reform process since they are the ones directly affected. So far only politicians were giving their opinion about education reform and we think that it is also important that students are fully involved as well. Organizing the conference in the form “students for students” was a huge success.” said the conference organizers Hilary and Shaked.
During the intensive discussions within the several focus groups students emphasised the most pressing issues that the education reform in BiH should solve. All students ‘suggestions are listed in the final declaration to be sent to the educational authorities as their viewpoints. In their declaration students wrote: “We are aware of the complexity of the current situation, and we acknowledge the difficulties of bringing about change. But it necessary to bring about change now. Our recommendations are made under six headings which represent our major concerns. The collaboration of recommendations concern curriculum issues, pedagogy, resources, personal and social development, school and community relationship and counting school opportunities. We are united in our commitment to work with authorities to bring about such change for the better of this county, these peoples and the students of future generations”
